Represented here by Secret Wars #10-12 (February-April 1985), ‘Death to the Beyonder!’ sees Doom makes his move, using a hastily constructed device to absorb all the omnipotent instigator’s power, using the stolen energies to rebuild himself and declare the Secret War over with Doom the sole victor… The premise was that all-powerful force The Beyonder abducted many Earth heroes and villains – and Galactus – in a quest to understand the emotion of desire. The enigmatic, almighty entity dumped the abducted on a purpose-built Battleworld created from and populated with fragments of other planets as a vast arena in which to prove which was better: “self-gratification or sacrifice”… The entire line-up consists of: Fantastic Four #5-6, 39-40, 236, 246-247, 258, 278-279, 350, 352, 358, Fantastic Four Annual #2, Amazing Spider-Man #5, Marvel Super-Heroes #20, Giant-Size Super-Villain Team-Up #1-2, Super-Villain Team-Up #13-14, Champions #16, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #14, Uncanny X-Men #145-147, Iron Man #149-150, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #10-12, Marvel Graphic Novel: Emperor Doom, Marvel Graphic Novel: Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment, Fantastic Four (1998) #67-70, 500, Fantastic Four Special (2005) #1, Books of Doom #1-6, and Doom stories from Astonishing Tales #1-3, 6-8, and Marvel Double-Shot #2. Published between 2010 and 2012, Avengers: The Children's Crusade from Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung is one such limited series. The focus is on two of the Young Avengers; Speed and Wiccan, who might be the reincarnations of the Scarlet Witch's children and they all set off in search for her, finding her in Latveria and set to marry Doom. Collects Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #1-9, Avengers: The Children’s Crusade – Young Avengers #1, Uncanny X-Men #526 (B Story) So it’s with mixed emotion that Doom realises Wonder Man and a select band of newly liberated Avengers are coming for him, determined to free the world or die… Doom was frequent threat to the Fantastic Four, and was the first foe to break another unspoken rule by going after other heroes in the cohesive shared universe Lee & Kirby were building.

Sadly, with the entire world an idealised clone of Switzerland, the Iron Despot is bored out of his mind…

Standard caveat: This has not been solicited by Marvel yet, so nothing is official until it’s official. Even then, things can change. Just keep coming to 13th Dimension for updates. Sheer comic enchantment, this a book no lover of the fantastic fiction can afford to ignore -just as long as they eat plenty of Spinach… Giant-Sized Super-Villain Team-Up #1 detailed how Doom and Namor grudgingly reunited, in a framing sequence by Thomas, John Buscema & Sinnott interlaced with reprints of previous meetings. Plus, the event led to the release of the very first Doctor Doom action figure complete with new badass battle armor. Victory! Emperor Doom Graphic Novel (1987) by David Michelinie, Mark Gruenwald, Jim Shooter, and Bob Hall Throughout his rich history, Victor Von Doom has put many Marvel heroes through hell, but in this classic book, Doom puts himself through Hell to save the one person he ever loved.

Finally, the connections he has with magic and the mystical create a unique dichotomy in Doom. The basic need of a child wanting to have a mother and be comforted by them drives him to learn more and struggle every year to save her. Who can't empathize with that? SVTU #13 (August 1977) ended the sleeping Atlantis storyline as Doom finally fulfilled his oath, and resurrected the comatose mer-people, but only after a blistering sub-sea battle between Namor, amphibian arch-nemesis Krang and a Brobdingnagian sea beast in ‘When Walks the Warlord!’ courtesy of Bill Mantlo, Keith Giffen & Don Perlin). In 1983, John Byrne wrote and drew Fantastic Four #258, an interlude in which the team doesn't feature at all; instead focusing entirely on Doom and particularly how he thinks about maintaining his legacy. The metal-shod maniac profited from Marvel’s first big expansion and won his own solo-series ( Astonishing Tales #1-8). It began with ‘Unto You is Born… the Doomsman!’ (July-August 1970) wherein Thomas & Wally Wood depicted the master manipulator’s daily struggle to maintain iron control over the Ruritanian kingdom of Latveria: building a super-robot to crush an incipient rebellion led by ousted Crown Prince Rudolfo and his mysterious sponsor.

But seriously, at this point in his classic career, Doom became the villain that legitimized new heroes in the Marvel Universe. Cage was a cool character but after facing down Doom, the Hero for Hire had major cred with fans. Medieval Times Iron Man #149-150 (1981) by Bob Layton, David Michelinie, and John Romita Jr. Fantastic Four #480-483 (or Vol. 3 #51-54), collected in Fantastic Four: Heroes Return – The Complete Collection Vol. 4 Writer/artist Walt Simonson and inker Allen Milgrom then end years of confusion in ‘The More Things Change…! (Or… It’s the Real Thing…’ ( Fantastic Four #350, cover-dated March 1991) as Doom, Kristoff and countless rogue Doombots all battle to decide who’s the real deal: a conflict mirrored by two overlapping iterations of the FF also deciding – far less lethally – who will stay in the official line up. With treachery and betrayal everywhere, the tale concludes in Fantastic Four #352 (May 1991) as ‘No Time Like the Present! (Or… It Ain’t Funny How Time Slips Away!’ sees both clashes coincide as time itself is sundered and the bureaucratic myrmidons of the Time Variance Authority step in…

Marvel Graphic Novel #49 – Triumph and Torment, collected in The Book of Doom Omnibus and Dr. Strange & Dr. Doom: Triumph and Torment One of therules that I’ve made for myself on Omni buys is not to buy omni’s on characters or villains that don’t have their own title, and that aren’t really from an authors run, but bounce around different titles. IMO, they just seem to be kind of a cash grab, as opposed to highlighting a writer or an inker. And why 2022? Because that’s the 60th anniversary of Doom’s first appearance, in Fantastic Four #5, which was released in April 1962. Bow before the majesty of Doctor Doom! The greatest villain of all is celebrated in a tome of tyranny six decades in the making! Featuring the Latverian ruler’s first battle with the accursed Reed Richards and his Fantastic Four — and their most epic clashes since! Plus: Doom’s unforgettable encounters with Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men and the Avengers! A trip to hell with Doctor Strange! The power of the Beyonder! Victor von Doom’s incredible life story contained in the Books of Doom! And more tales of the Lord of Latveria! Later, appearances showcase his cunningness and the fact that he's a ruler of a country. His ego is always present (and usually his downfall) but there's also his honor. For years it was just assumed that he ruled his country with an iron fist and the people were miserable, but once it was revealed (in a couple different stories) that he was actually successful and ruled a prosperous and happy country, yet another dimension is added to this complex villain.
