American jets are getting shot down at an unprecedented rate over Vietnam. In an urgent effort to regain the advantage the Admirals turn to a young naval aviator called Dan Pedersen.

Film producer John Davis said that Top Gun was a recruiting video for the Navy, and that people saw the movie and said, "Wow! I want to be a pilot." The Navy had recruitment booths in some theaters to attract enthusiastic patrons. [84] After the film's release, a popular claim arose that the number of young men who joined the Navy wanting to be naval aviators went up by 500%; [85] however, its accuracy has since been disputed, with modern analyses indicating a more modest total Navy enlistment increase of 8%. [86] [87] Officially, the programme he set up was called the US Navy Fighter Weapons School. To everyone else it was known simply as TOPGUN

Retrieved August 20, 2018. Pedersen was the senior officer of seven founding members of the U.S. Navy’s Fighter Weapons School, “TOPGUN”, in March of 1969, and its first commanding officer. Topgun was founded in response to unacceptable losses in air-to-air combat over North Vietnam. Prior to the Vietnam conflict and Topgun’s beginning, U.S. aerial warfare doctrine had shifted to a dependence on long range, supersonic interceptors designed to engage enemy aircraft from “Beyond Visual Range” (BVR) using missiles. The problem with this doctrine was, the North Vietnamese did not adhere to it. U.S. fighter pilots over North Vietnam were hamstrung by complex rules of engagement that required them to make visual confirmation (not just radar) of enemy aircraft before firing. That meant getting close. Both the U.S. Navy and Air Force found themselves in close-range, tight-turning aerial combat that more closely resembled WWI than the hypothetical long-range, supersonic missile duels of the future that think-tank strategists had envisioned. U.S. losses in aerial combat were high. Topgun was formed by the U.S. Navy to change that. Top 200 Albums – Billboard". Billboard. Archived from the original on June 23, 2013 . Retrieved February 19, 2020.What resulted was nothing short of a revolution -- one that took young American pilots from the crucible of combat training in the California desert to the blistering skies of Vietnam, in the process raising America's Navy combat kill ratio from two enemy planes downed for every American plane lost to more than 22 to 1. Topgun emerged not only as an icon of America's military dominance immortalized by Hollywood but as a vital institution that would shape the nation's military strategy for generations to come. Overall, I enjoyed the book a lot, a great read to start out 2023 for me, and I would definitely recommend it! Top Gun is a movie that I take a lot of inspiration from. There’s a lot more to it than dogfights and beach volleyball. Top Gun itself is a school that was designed to teach dogfighting (as the starting scenes of the original and the recent sequel remind us). Its curriculum was systematically designed to produce the best naval aviators in the world, to push these young pilots to their limits and sharpen their skills and abilities beyond what they thought was possible. On 20 October 1980, he became the captain of the aircraft carrier USS Ranger. In April 1981 Airman Recruit Paul A. Trerice died in the Ranger 's correctional custody unit. [11] [12] [13] Trerice's father brought a lawsuit against Pedersen, Ranger 's executive officer and others but the case was dismissed. [14] On 11 June 1982 he relinquished command of Ranger and became deputy chief of staff for the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. [2] :257
